Specialists traditionally argued for a sixteenth-century Apache entry into the region, in part because early Spanish accounts described them in the Plains of Texas and eastern New Mexico. Scholars assumed they were recent arrivals. Archeological work in the 1970s, however, affirmed an Apachean presence in the Central Plains in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

When they moved to their reservations, the Southern Arapahos numbered about 1,200 and the Northern Arapahos, 1,000. The Southern Arapahos continued to hunt bison until 1878, when game became scarce.
