In 1878, Charles Zenger reported a method of measuring the relative intensity of planetary discs and satellites: he noted the time of disappearance of planetary features near twilight9 . Zenger based his work on that of Bunsen (of prior fame in spectrum analysis) who had used a photographic technique to measure the background intensity of the sky versus the zenith distance of the sun, this serving as the reference for the threshold technique.
